On May 1st, my husband and I ran in the 11th Annual OKC Memorial Marathon, our second official marathon. He completed his first half marathon, which consists of 13 miles, and I ran a small 5k, 3 miles. Our morning began at 4:30 am, to make the shuttle that would take us downtown for our starting corrals. His race begins at 6:30 and mine at 6:40. That was until the skies were covered in thick rain and lightning, plus 54 degree temps. We were wet, cold, and tired, and we hadn't even ran yet. We were joined by 24,000 other willing participants, warming ourselves under an awning of a building. We received an announcement that the marathon would be postponed until 7:00 am. So, as a joined force, we sat together and waited out the storm. Thirty minutes later, we were called to our starting lines, and the race was on. Willie took off at 7:00 and I followed at 7:10 for a run we definitely would remember. We ran in heavier rain, wind, cold, and not to mention, hail and occasional small flashes of lightning. I'm not sure if I ran faster because my hands were numb and I was drenched like a wet dog, or if I was afraid to be zapped by the lightning around me, but I completed my run in 38 minutes. Excited as I was to cross the finish line, I still had to wait on my partner in crime. As I stood there close to the finish line, watching all of the participants complete their race, the lightning began to get worse, the hail began to fall, and the rain was falling so hard, it was hard to see the camera showing the runners approaching. Then, I see my favorite person in the world, soaking wet, tired looking, but finishing a race that he trained for. He completed his run in 2 hours and 28 minutes, his best. I was so proud of his accomplishment and my own. So, here is a picture of us at our 2nd marathon, him 25 pounds lighter and me 10 pounds lighter. Whether that's before or after the race is still to be determined. All I know is, I wouldn't have done this without him. I'm truly blessed.
